Dr. David Malitz
Dr. Malitz didn’t go into ophthalmology because it was practical. He went in because he watched what losing vision does to a person — and he wanted to be the one who could give it back.
David Malitz grew up in the Detroit area, the son of a Chicago-born family. He was the kind of student who could have gone into any field — and instead of taking the shortest path into ophthalmology, he took the longest one he could find.
Medical school at UCLA. Then Internal Medicine training — learning to see the whole patient, not just the organ — before specializing in eye surgery at one of the most respected programs in the country. Most ophthalmologists skip that step. Dr. Malitz took it because he believed better surgeons are made when you understand the whole person sitting in the chair.
That combination — a deep understanding of systemic medicine layered with highly specialized surgical training — is what brought him to Las Vegas in 2004. It’s what’s kept him doing every consultation, every surgery, and every follow-up himself for more than three decades.

One of the first surgeons in the nation to implant the Odyssey lens
Johnson & Johnson selected Dr. Malitz’s practice as a national roll-out site for the Odyssey intraocular lens — a next-generation multifocal IOL that mirrors natural vision across distance, intermediate, and near.
This WTVW news segment follows Dr. Malitz into the operating room as he performs one of the first Odyssey implantations in the country. The lens is designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses after cataract surgery, giving patients a continuous range of focus that earlier multifocal designs couldn’t achieve.
Being chosen as a roll-out site isn’t random — J&J selects surgeons with the case volume, technical precision, and outcomes data to validate a new product launch. It’s the kind of recognition that Dr. Malitz doesn’t put on a billboard, but that patients and referring doctors should know about.
Why Las Vegas
A Midwest surgeon who chose the desert
Dr. Malitz grew up in the Midwest — Chicago, Detroit, Ann Arbor, back to Chicago for residency. He chose Las Vegas because the city needed what he could offer: high-volume surgical expertise delivered with personal attention, not a corporate model. Twenty years later, he’s still the surgeon who does every case himself.
Desert eyes are different
After 20+ years in Las Vegas, Dr. Malitz has treated more dry eye, pterygium, and UV-related conditions than most ophthalmologists see in a career. That volume shapes every recommendation he makes.
AAAHC-accredited surgery center
Red Rock Surgery Center meets the same accreditation standards required of hospital outpatient departments. Medicare-certified and regularly inspected.
Patients from across the country
Fly-in patients choose Dr. Malitz for the combination of surgical experience and personal care that larger corporate centers can't offer. Las Vegas is a direct flight from most major cities.
